What happens when an up-and-coming editor/intern/writer gets a full thirty minutes for lunch?
She starts a blog, that's what.
Of course I've blogged before. There was my brief London blog and then my mission blog (which was LEGAL, just for the record). There are also several blogs I've thought of but haven't created.
Those should count, right? Wrong.
The problem with starting a blog... Well, there are several problems. The first is the blog name.
You want it to be light but deep, witty but serious, fun but sophisticated. And (like the perfect pair of jeans) that combination just isn't out there. Or at least it's not for the taking. (I would have said "the perfect man" but--joy be!--I'm happily married. So no man bashing here!)
Initially I wanted something that reflected David's upcoming med school debut... but I couldn't fit "poor newlyweds take on the world as editor and med student" in that cute/clever/sophisticated name. So as I was washing my hands in the bathroom and cursing automated faucets that do not work until the soap is all dry anyway, I thought, "Editorial musings!" It doesn't do justice to the whole broke/newlywed/med school things, but I figure that's what subtitles are for.
And then comes the domain name.
Ah. The domain name.
So I spent seven minutes of my allotted thirty typing in variations on Editorial Musings. Seems everyone else had thought of this particular title, and Blogger's solution was unknown_editorialmusings. Like I want my blog to being with "unknown!" Ingenue, maybe. Soon to be known, closer to the truth. But unknown? It made me feel like some broken link.
Finally I had the brilliant idea to start off with my full name (Jess's would translate to jesss which looks like it has one to many s's), and that is why we are here. At the blog. Still with ten minutes of lunch to go.
